Hong Kong street racing
Here is a collection of youtube clips I found about street racing in Hong Kong. A lot of the clips I found were just douchbags who couldn't drive for squat. However, the clips you are about to see below showcase driving from some great/crazy drivers.
First up, we have Mr. Mang Hang (which translates to Blind Magistrate). I'm not sure why he's called that, but he was regarded as one of the best street racers in HK. If I recall correctly he did eventually get caught by police and was arrested for his behaviour, although I don't remember if that included jail time.
BTW the first minute of the video is pretty dumb. He's trying to show his handbrake "drifting" skills in a FF DC2 Type R.... The rest of it is great though.
This is part 4 of a series on youtube. You can watch the other parts by clicking the links in the "related videos" section at the end of the clip. I included part 4 because it's the most interesting one. In case you don't understand Cantonese, he explains how to drive fast on Hong Kong highways by doing things like taking a wide line into a corner and not hitting the apex because this gives more room for error if anything goes wrong.
This guy is a nutter! Some great footage (though unfortunately low res) of him racing around the south side of HK around the Stanley and Shek O areas in a Clio 182. Clio's are not common in HK because European cars in general are not as durable as Japanese cars due to the high humidity and temperatures in HK. Things like the electronics and cooling systems tend to break easliy on Euro cars in HK. Having not seen many Clio's I'm surprised how quick it is. I did see a blue Clio once driving fast along Clearwater Bay road from Choi Hung towards the turnoff to Sai Kung, and he was really fast and must have been doing around 130-150 km/h. I wonder if it's the same guy?
OK, this is not street racing, nor is it in HK but this guy's skills definitely deserve a mention. This is in car footage from the Macau Grand Prix and it looks like qualifying for the local touring car class (mainly drivers from Macau and HK). Notice how close he gets to the concrete walls and barriers!
Finally, a lighthearted video to finish off this post ;-)

My cars
Right now my Lancer Evolution 1 is undergoing bodywork and repainting and as such am still driving my trusty Mazda 2 Hatchback.
My previous car was an Escort Cosworth:
This was a great car but had lots of random mechanical problems which forced me to get rid of it. I bought the Mazda 2 as a replacement because I was sick of all the mechanical hassles. However, having driven it for 2 years I found I really miss turbo 4wd power! So, fingers crossed when I get my Evo 1 I'll have better luck this time.

More randoms
Dunno why I never noticed it before, but these are the coffee cups they use at Tsui Wah. Surprisingly kitschy.
I wonder what it would be like ordering takout over the phone in English working here....
I found this outside a resturant somwhere.
This road is in Sai Kung where there's also a road named "Fuk Man Road". Surely someone was taking the piss?

Random
Random billboard I found while playing GTAIV. In case you can't read the slogan it says "You're in for a good time" hahaha.
Real world science fiction architecture
I went to Kowloon Bay the other evening for dinner and noticed an uncanny resemblance to the architecture in the city sections of 2 games I've been playing recently (Mass Effect 2: The Lair of The Shadow Broker DLC and Halo Reach). Here are some pics for comparison:

Here are a couple of screenshots from an upcoming game called Deus Ex: Human Revolution to compare:
Part of the reason for my surprise was that Kowloon Bay used to be an industrial area and looked like this:
This metamorphosis started with a shopping center called "Megabox" which was in itself quite modern in design:
Now Kowloon Bay seems to be rapidly developing into a modern business and entertainment area.
Jumping on the bandwagon
I've been spending a lot of time lately browsing the web and (so far) have not found any blogs from Hong Kong combining my love of sports cars, video games, gadgets and other general geek related stuff. With that in mind I finally decided to try creating my first blog. It will be interesting to see if anyone else out there in the world shares my same interests.
